Left: The Rorailer: LNER maintenance lorry

This is a lorry fitted with both rubber-tyred road wheels and flanged rail wheels, mounted on an eccentric-pin system that allowed either wheel to be put in the lower (active) position.

The West Highland railway area has a low population density and is hard to run at a profit. Presumably it was hoped that this arrangement would be more economical than a steam-hauled maintenance train.
